Leading Organizational Change 

August 14, 2008

COURSE SUMMARY

A one day course (7 hours) consisting lectures, worksheets, and role plays that will provide attendees with an in-depth appreciation of the change process and skills a leader needs to apply to himself and those impacted by implementing the change.   The following topics are covered:

  • Review the mission and vision of the organization affected
  • Determine what must end and how to begin the movement from the former ways
  • Honoring and encouraging resistance to the change
  • Identify the transition stage and barriers and bridges to communication for effectively crossing this stressful territory
  • Develop six key actions steps (“A” Factors) to assist in arriving at the new beginning
  • Importance of planting the change into the culture of the organization

 COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 
This seminar will:

  • Provide understanding of the change process
  • Identity elements essential for a leader to plan for effective change
  • Identify resistant factors that may hinder the change implementation
  • Understand that resilience is required for those affected by the change
  • Apply six key action steps (“A” Factors)  to execute and institutionalize the change

 WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Directors, Managers, Supervisors, project managers, team/task force leaders and others responsible for initiating and/or implementing a change within their organization.  

 PRE-REQUISTITES:

 
None.  Attendees will use several tools such as Force Field Analysis, Hidden Resource Finder, Action Planning, Gantt Charts. 

 LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Participants will learn how to:

  • Effectively initiate a change
  • Guide those affected by the change through the process
  • Use resistance to facilitate communication about the change
  • Implement the change so it will become part of the culture
  • Involve all levels in the change process

 COURSE OUTLINE:
1. The Leader’s Role
• Change itself
• The shock of change
• Overt and covert aspects of change
• Understanding reactions to change
• Being a change master

2. Preparation for Change
• Being clear about your mission, vision and values
• Goals for the change
• Metrics for knowing you have arrived
• Key Action One: “Anticipate”: Why the change

3. The Change Process
• Unfreeze
• Move/transition
• Refreeze

4. Ending Stage (Unfreeze)
• Breaking the news
• Key Action Step Two: “Adapt”: Ask for reactions
• Honoring resistance
• Identifying what will, will not change
• Separation from the old

5. Transition Stage
• Communication plan implemented
• Key Action Step Three: “Accept”: Clarify misunderstandings
• Focus on the future
• Building support
• Key Action Step Four: “Adopt”: Involvement of those affected by the change
• Stress relievers: celebrate milestones

6. New Beginnings Stage (Refreeze)
• Celebrate implementation of change
• Reward champions who assisted
• Key Action Step Five: “Arrive”: Ask for support and commitment
• Review honestly the ups and downs of the process
• Assess acceptance by culture of the new beginnings
• Key Action Step Six: “Allocate”: Act to Hold the Gain
• Act to hold gains with Action Plan 

METHOD OF EVALUATION:
Through observation of assigned exercises, open questions and class discussion, attendance, and an evaluation form, the student will demonstrate his/her ability to successfully complete the required outcomes.  Certificates of Attendance are given to all students who complete the 7 hours of course work. CEU credit will be assigned a grade of “S” Satisfactory.
